Preparing for Your Weekly Grocery Trip | CrossFit Willis

November 13, 2017

For some of you, this post will seem like common sense. This post is not for you, this is for those of you who are not familiar with the process of preparing and cooking an entire week's worth of food in one day. If that is you, read on!

Have you ever found walking aimlessly around HEB on a Sunday afternoon, wondering what in the world you're going to feed your family this week? More likely than not, you probably have not properly prepared for the seemingly overwhelming process of the weekly grocery trip. There's nothing more frustrating than finally getting home after braving the crowds and lines, only to find you forgot essential ingredients for 3 of the meals you planned on cooking this week.

One surefire and simple way to alleviate {almost} all the stress of your weekly trip to grocery store is going into it with not only a list, but the mother of all meal prep lists. Stay with me, don't be intimidated. Let's dive into a few ways you can make your own itemized and organized list ( to my type A ears) to make your next trip a breeze.

1. First, you'll want to know what you've got on the menu for the week. Get creative! Hop on Pinterest and find a few simple, yummy dishes for the family to enjoy this week.

2. You'll then want to figure out just what ingredients you'll need for each of these dishes (hence the suggestion to go simple, 5 ingredients or less typically lead to successful dinners in my house). Write the ingredients and their quantities out, leaving out (or crossing off) the staple ingredients you already have on hand.

3. Next, you'll want to consolidate the list. Need one small onion for each of your 5 meals? Write out "5 small onions" on your list. Then write out "1 large tube of toothpaste", 'cause that's a lot of onion.

4. Pay careful attention to this step, as it is an essential part of making your trip as quick and painless as possible. Itemize your list by department. I don't know how many times I have made my way all around the store, only to realize at the end that the last item is from the front of the store. I now have to make my way all the way back, just to grab a stupid sweet potato. It never fails that as I make my way back to the veggie department I pass a wide open lane, just begging me to check out. Of course when I get back, there'll be a line of 17 carts....but I digress.

With these few simple steps, you will quickly be on your way to tackling your weekly shopping trip. Good luck and please reach out with any questions!
